Two vessels, JS URAGA (Mine Sweeper Tender) and JS HIRADO (Mine Sweeper Ocean) of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), arrived at Chattogram Port on 8 January 2022 for a goodwill port visit. They will stay in Chattogram till 10 January 2022.

Receiving Ceremony was held on the same day at the port jetty. Captain NOGUCHI Yasushi, Commanding Officer of the Deployment, and his officers were received by Captain Masudul Karim Siddique, Chief Staff Officer to Commander, Chattogram Naval Area and greeted by H.E. Mr. ITO Naoki, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh.

During this port visit, the Bangladesh Navy will organize exchange programs such as visits on board. Ambassador ITO and Captain NOGUCHI will make courtesy calls on Rear Admiral Mohammad Mozammel Haque, Commander, Chattogram Naval Area, Commodore Mir Ershad Ali, Commander, Bangladesh Navy Fleet, and Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, Chariman, Chattogram Port Authority respectively on 9th. The Japanese delegates will also make a courtesy call on Mr. Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Honorable Mayor, Chattogram City Corporation. Moreover, JS HIRADO and JS URAGA will conduct a goodwill exercise with the Bangladesh Navy in the surrounding sea on 10th.

The JMSDF has made port visits to Chattogram two times before, in 2012 and in 2019. This third visit has taken place in a very memorable year, which marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Bangladesh. This port visit is particularly significant, as it is the event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the two countries.

JS URAGA and JS HIRADO departed from Japan on 12 December 2021 for IMED21: Indo-Pacific and Middle East Deployment 21 and has made a visit to Bangladesh after Brunei. They will also visit Sri Lanka, Bahrain, and Malaysia, returning to Japan on 31 March 2022. It is expected that this port visit will not only strengthen bilateral relations between Japan and Bangladesh but also contribute to realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”, which is a vision to secure peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

On December 21, H.E. ITO Naoki joined the International Nutrition Olympiad (INO) 2021 Inaugural Ceremony jointly organized by the Ministry of Food and the BIID Foundation with the support of GAIN.

The theme of the Olympiad this year was “Let The Youth Lead in Nutrition”. It aimed to foster youth networks at national and regional levels to advocate improving nutritional status for all and finding innovative ways to improve nutrition awareness and behavior.

Ambassador Ito congratulated International Nutrition Olympiad and Bangladeshi youth at Nutrition Club as an inclusive global platform to challenge malnutrition in a sustainable approach.

From Japan, Euglena Co., Ltd, the youngest Chief Future Officer (17-year-old), Ms. Rena Kawasaki, shared Japanese youth activities to raise awareness of Nutrition and Health.

“Enthusiastic youth could be part of a decision-making circle to improve nutrition status in collaboration with various stakeholders such as governments, international organizations, businesses, civil society, and academia. In particular, their action is vital to achieving, Universal Health Coverage, one of the critical thematic areas of the Tokyo Compact on Global Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G) 2021. I am delighted to participate this commemorable side event of Tokyo N4G summit with passionate youngsters to make a difference for the future together.”said Ambassador ITO at the ceremony.

On December 21, 704,010 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines manufactured in Japan arrived at Dhaka International Airport from Japan. This was delivered as an add-on to the 788,200 doses of vaccine that arrived on December 14, totaling approximately 1.5 million doses.

In July and August, the Government of Japan provided over 3 million doses AstraZeneca vaccines to Bangladesh through the COVAX Facility to meet the urgent needs of the Bangladeshi people who had been long waiting for the AstraZeneca vaccine. Considering the fact that there are still many people who require vaccination in Bangladesh, and in light of the important relationship between Japan and Bangladesh, the Government of Japan decided to provide another 1.5 million vaccines to the people of Bangladesh.

 “I am delighted that Japan has delivered another 704,010 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines to Bangladesh. We delivered over 4.5 million doses of vaccines for the Bangladeshi people since July. We hope this vaccine support will contribute to the Bangladesh government’s efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Japan hopes that equitable and comprehensive access to safe and effective vaccines will be ensured in Bangladesh. I would like to reiterate that Japan will stand by Bangladesh in the fight against COVID-19 and will work together to contain COVID-19.”, said H.E. Mr. ITO Naoki, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh.

 On December 14, 788,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines manufactured in Japan arrived at Dhaka International Airport from Japan. In addition, another consignment of 704,010 doses is scheduled to arrive on December 21, totaling approximately 1.5 million doses.

    In July and August, the Government of Japan provided over 3 million doses AstraZeneca vaccines to Bangladesh through the COVAX Facility to meet the urgent needs of the Bangladeshi people who had been long waiting for the AstraZeneca vaccine. Considering the fact that there are many people who are still in need for vaccination in Bangladesh, and in light of the important relationship between Japan and Bangladesh, the Government of Japan decided to provide another 1.5 million vaccines to the people of Bangladesh.

    On December 15, a handover ceremony was held by the Government of Bangladesh at Padma State Guest House, which was attended by H.E. Mr. Zahid Maleque, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Mr. Lokman Hossain Miah, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Mr. Shabib Ahmed Choudhury, Foreign Secretary (West), Mr. Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative to Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Robert C Dickson, British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, and H.E. Mr. ITO Naoki, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh.

    “We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the generous support from Japan, especially in health sector. Japan is our best long-standing friend. The high rollout of vaccines has made it possible for Bangladesh to keep the infection rate low.”, said H.E. Mr. Maleque.

    “I am delighted that Japan has delivered another 788,200 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines to Bangladesh. We plan to deliver another 704,010 doses next week totaling approximately 1.5 million doses. This is purely for the sake of the Bangladeshi people. We hope this vaccine support will contribute to the Bangladesh government’s efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Japan hopes that fair, equitable and comprehensive access to safe and effective vaccines will be ensured in Bangladesh and I would like to reiterate that Japan will stand by Bangladesh in the fight against COVID-19 and will work together to contain COVID-19.”, said H.E. Mr. ITO Naoki, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh.

The ‘Japan Desk’ has been launched at the office of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The desk was inaugurated by Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki on the fourth floor of the World Trade Center in Agrabad on Tuesday afternoon.  Business leaders of the two countries were present at the time.

At this desk, any Japanese investment company can ask for help in investing in Bangladesh.  They can ask for e-mail, telephone or any other investment related service directly.  This desk will provide investment data and legal advice.  Necessary advice and services will be provided through this desk by conducting market survey on trade and commerce of Bangladesh, especially Chittagong.

The desk has been set up in a joint venture between Chittagong Chamber of Commerce, Japan External Trade Organization or JETRO and Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry or JBCCI.

Chamber President Mahbubul Alam said the desk was launched as a first step in signing a memorandum of understanding with JBCCI and JETRO to increase Japanese investment in the country.  He hopes that this will increase Japanese investment.

Japanese Ambassador Ito Naoki said the two countries have a long-standing friendly relationship.  Even after the Corona, the economy of Bangladesh is very stable.  Matarbari and Mirsarai Bangabandhu Industrial Estate in Greater Chittagong are being studied to increase Japanese investment.

At present, more than 300 Japanese companies are conducting business in Bangladesh.  With the launch of this help desk, new companies will be interested in investing in this country.
